Nintendo bets big on smartphones as they explore peripherals for them.
After releasing Miitomo, Nintendo still has an Animal Crossing and a Fire Emblem IP based game/app set for release. There are also two unannounced titles that are scheduled to release before March. Takahashi leads the smart device dev team at Nintendo and he had some interesting things to say about the future of Nintendo in that division. The full Q&A from the shareholders meeting can be read here. One choice quote from Takahashi is below:
Physical controllers for smart device applications are available in the market and it is possible that we may also develop something new by ourselves. On the other hand, I believe Nintendo’s way of thinking is to look at whether action games are really not impossible (without a physical controller for smart device applications) to create and how we can make it happen to create such a game. I think we will make applications, and not just action games, in consideration of what best embodies “Nintendo-like” applications, including applications for everyone from children to seniors.
Since iOS and Android already support controllers, maybe Nintendo looks to expand their unique input devices to smart phones and tablets in the future just like they do on their own consoles. Imagine a virtual console service for your phone with a Nintendo controller.
