Electronic Arts and Maxis are opening up Create-A-Sim by getting rid of the gender restrictions on clothes, hair, walk style, voice pitch and physique.
The publisher of the long-running life simulation game is addressing the issue in the latest update, which will allow players to create gender-fluid Sims that can wear any garment or hairstyle that was previously restricted to either male or female Sims. EA and Maxis say over 700 pieces of content previously available to specific genders will now be accessible regardless of their gender across the base game and its various expansions.
The publisher said that they wanted to “make sure players can create characters they can identify with or relate to through powerful tools that give them influence over a Sims’ gender, age, ethnicity, body type and more.” Executive producer of The Sims 4, Rachel Franklin, said in an email to The Associated Press that the update has been in development for over a year, saying that “female Sims can wear sharp men’s suits like Ellen (DeGeneres), and male Sims can wear heels like Prince.”
Franklin also noted that Sims are now able to change their gender at any time, saying that she worked with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender advocacy group GLAAD to ensure the update fully encompassed the requirements of the community.
