It’s no secret that beloved director Taika Waititi is working on a Star Wars movie, but we’ve learned virtually no information regarding what to expect from the new film since the project was revealed back in 2020. However, Waititi has finally opened up just a bit about his vision for the future of a galaxy far, far away.
“Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand,” Waititi told Total Film (via GamesRadar). “I don’t think that I’m any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, well that’s the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah, that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.’ That all stands alone, that’s great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it’s a very small story.”
By the sounds of it, Waititi has plans to tell some fresh stories in the Star Wars universe, which may come as a relief to many diehard Star Wars fans who have grown tired of the Skywalker family and adjacent characters and stories. After Rise of Skywalker brought the mainline series to a close, many feel it’s time to move on.
